Elmer McCurdy was an outlaw who was killed in a shootout in Oklahoma in 1911. His body was mummified and displayed, eventually used for commercial gain.

McCurdy's corpse had been used in a roller coaster attraction and was discovered to be human in December 1976. Although he was identified days after the discovery that his body was real, he had been unidentified for years, as his body was bought by the establishment and was thought to be a mannequin at the time.
