Michaela Joy Garecht was an American girl who was abducted from a parking lot in November 1988. She has never been seen since her disappearance. Some speculate she was murdered, while others believe she may be alive and being kept in captivity.
Michaela was abducted by an unapprehended man from a parking lot in Hayward, California. The man, possibly Loren Herzog, had set her scooter against his vehicle. When Michaela came to retrieve it, the man forced her into his vehicle and drove away.
Loren Herzog, who strongly resembled a police sketch of the abductor, admitted to murdering Michaela before he committed suicide.
Michaela's face has been age-progressed by the NCMEC, but has not yielded any clues to finding her.
After Jaycee Dugard was found alive in the captivity of Phillip and Nancy Garrido in 2009, hopes of Michaela being alive resurfaced, as circumstances between both cases were similar. The Garridos have not been charged with Garacht's kidnapping.
Despite the possibility that Michaela may be dead, her mother still has hope that she will eventually be reunited with her daughter. Her father, however, has expressed his doubts about Michaela being alive.
